REMEMBERING MAILE HALE - 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF 911
Today, September 11, our nation observes Patriot Day. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks, a day of profound significance for our country and uniquely for our own school community.
We remember and honor Kaiser Alumna and Valedictorian, Maile Rachel Hale, who tragically passed away that day. In her honor, and in remembrance of all who perished, flags will be flown at half-staff tomorrow per Governor Greenʻs proclamation.
A Living Memorial:
A living memorial stands on the Henry J. Kaiser High School campus to honor the memory of those lost on September 11, 2001, and to keep their legacy alive.
Honoring Maile Rachel Hale:
Among the nearly 3,000 lives lost 25 years ago was Maile Rachel Hale, Kaiser High School's brilliant 1993 class valedictorian.
Her Passion and Talents:
During her years at Kaiser, Maile was an active member of the soccer and math teams, the National Honor Society, and the Amnesty International Club, with a deep love for the ocean and dancing.
A Rising Leader:
After majoring in chemistry at Wesleyan University, she moved to Boston and rapidly rose to become the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Boston Investor Services by the young age of 26. Sadly, her life was cut short while attending a conference on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower.
The Grounds:
In 2001, Kaiser's student body officers dedicated a memorial consisting of a bronze plaque, a kukui nut tree, and a basalt boulder hauled from Hanauma Bay where she played as a child. The kukui tree, or "Maile's Tree," symbolizes her vibrant talents and the bright "light" she brought into the lives of everyone she knew.
Living Traditions:
Today, her legacy is embraced by the school; the Kaiser Girls' Soccer Team holds team meetings under the tree, and the Kaiser Marching Band lays their leis on her memorial after marching in parades.
An Inspiring Message:
Her sister Marilyce's words at the dedication still echo: "Have the strength to follow the path of your own life—and remember—whatever circumstances you find yourself facing, stand tall and go forward with courage."
