October Coffee Hour Takeaways

The October Coffee hour was a success. The major questions parents asked were: transitioning back to campus, safety returning to campus, sports and homework.

Question  Response
Sports:
Questions of when sports will return and if students can do conditioning on campus.
The OIA has been working with the DOE to come up with plans for a safe return to sports. Unfortunately, right now the school is closed for any practices.
Transition:
Will it be hybrid?
What is the criteria for returning students to campus?
The HIDOE has come up with Return to Learn Opening Plan which outlines our guidance for return.
Right now, Kaiser is in a Yellow phase, therefore we may return to blended learning.
On Nov. 9th, students who are most vulnerable academically and emotionally have been invited back to campus. Of the 157 students, 90% will return.
On Dec 7th, we will welcome back our Senior class for final semester assessments.
We hope to transition the Freshmen after Winter Break, then Sophomores and Juniors.
Kaiser wants to keep the A/B Daily rotation as it is working well. No matter how we open, for now it has to hybrid until the restrictions change.
Safety & Cleaning
We will use plans from the opening of school, directional signs which guide you up and down staircases. Kaiser has no touch hand sanitizers for each classroom and enough for refill.
We are asking families to bring wipes to clean desks between classes.
Homework:
Still seems excessive as students are online 6 hours a day and then more for homework.
Are students required to check their Google Classroom for assignments due on weekends?
This was a concern from the last coffee hour and brought up during the teacher's faculty meeting. Teachers were asked to reflect on how much online work they were assigning.
As far as assignments due on weekends, Yes, students need to be checking their Google Classrooms on the weekends. Project based learning doesn't stop in the classroom.

On a positive note, parents reported that their teens are required to do more physical exercise. This a concern from the last meeting.

For our next coffee hour we will do a morning and evening session, to make it more accessible to more parents.

Parents, Mahalo for your time. You are important to us!
